Overseas
We believe at St Andrews that we are called to be a church modelled after Acts 1 verse 8, where Jesus said,
'But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.'

JANE JERRARD
Jane has been the Primary Education Project Co-ordinator for the Diocese of Hyderabad since September 1997. “My work is essentially about empowerment”, says Jane, “giving people an opportunity to discover new skills so that they can become agents of change in their communities, bringing education to the next generation. Christians learn more about their faith and how they can be salt and light in their communities. Those of other faiths experience the love and mercy of God, pointing them to Jesus, who came to serve all humanity”. The challenges are great: many villages in rural Sindh do not have a primary school and the literacy rate is therefore one of the lowest in the country. Education is especially difficult for girls. Most of them work in the home or in the fields and it is considered unsafe for them to travel any distance to attend school. Christians and Hindus as minority communities, face discrimination and work for Muslim landlords as bonded labourers. Hyderabad Diocese began to address these problems in two ways: firstly, by creating hostels, which enable Christian children from a Hindu background to live in a safe and secure place, receive quality education, develop life skills and grow spiritually. Secondly, through the development of Village LEAP (Literacy and Education Awareness Programme), 100 village schools have been opened around 5 Core Training Centre Schools in 5 main areas of the diocese. (Hyderabad/South Sindh, Tando Allahyar, khwaja Goth and Khipro). A team of 5 co-ordinators, 10 trainers and 25 facilitators, provide initial teacher training, build relationships with local communities and oversee the development of these schools that serve all faith communities. In the next 5 years, the focus will be on long-term sustainability: strengthening the links between the schools, hostels and local church, providing in-service training and accessing wider support through other organizations and government initiatives.
